Elfriede Shane - Alta Lodge Owner

Alta ski lodge owner Elfriede Shane passed away December 3, 2020 at age 97.

Born in Mannheim, Germany, Elfriede came to America at age three. In 1941 she married Jim Shane and settled in Salt Lake City. Elfriede worked for the Army Corps of Engineers and Jim served in the U.S. Army Air Force, After the war Jim taught skiing at Alta, and in 1962 they opened the Goldminer’s Daughter lodge. They expanded the lodge in 1967 and 1974. When Jim died in 1998, Elfriede operated the lodge for two years, and then retired, having managed the lodge for nearly 40 years.
