Passing Date

Jackson Hole innkeeper Dietrich Hermann Oberreit passed away peacefully on April 6 at age 95.

Born in Paterson, New Jersey, following the death of his father, he moved to his mother’s native Switzerland at age eight. The family returned to the United States in 1942. Oberreit enlisted in the U.S. Navy while attending Rutgers University. After discharge he worked for the Bendix Corp. and met his wife Anneliese while skiing with the New Jersey Ski Club.

In 1965 the couple moved with their three children to Jackson, Wyoming, where they built the Bavarian-style Alpenhof Lodge near the base of the tram. Today, it is one of the few remaining original properties in Teton Village. It was accepted to the National Register of Historic Places in 2016.

Oberreit served as president of the Teton Village Resort Association for many years. The couple divorced in 1983 but continued to run the Alpenhof together until they sold it in 1988. —S.M.
