David Stoecklein - Idaho photographer

David Stoecklein, 65, whose ski-action photos were a mainstay of ski magazine features and advertising in the late '70s and '80s, died of cancer on November 10.

Dave grew up in Fox Chapel, Penn., a suburb of Pittsburgh, but moved West in his early 20s to pursue photography as a profession. After working in California and Utah, he arrived in Ketchum, Idaho in the early 1980s, and settled there. He shot skiing, fly fishing, golf and the cowboy lifestyle. His assignments for SKI Magazine led to a prosperous career shooting ads for Marlboro, Stetson, Ford, Canon, Coca Cola, Chevrolet, Remington, Pontiac, Wrangler, Jeep and Chrysler, among others. His work appeared in National Geographic, Outdoor Photographer, Western Horseman and several other Western lifestyle magazines. He set up a small publishing company to print and sell his own books (28 in all), fine-art photo prints, calendars, posters and cards, and ran photo workshops at his ranch in Mackay, Idaho.

He is survived by his wife Mary and sons Drew of Bozeman, Montana, Taylor of Sun Valley and Colby of Boise, Idaho;  brothers Walter and  Buzzy and sisters Julie Stoecklein and Debbie Carroll.
