The Skier by Ellen Emmet Rand (1875– 1941) depicts Peter DeVito, a young man who worked on Rand’s family farm in Salisbury, Connecticut. Rand specialized in portraits and painted more than 500 works during her career, including portraits of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, cellist Pablo Casals and her cousins, author Henry James and philosopher- psychologist William James. The Skier is on display in Connecticut; see page 29.
