Letter From The President: ISHA President John Fry writes that magagement of Skiing Heritage is in the hands of a new editor, Dick Needham, former editor of Ski Magazine. Executive editor Seth Masia doubles as manager of ISHA's website, skiinghistory.org. He notes the foundation of ski halls of fame for Vermont and Pennsylvania.

Readers Respond Eddy Ancinas sends along a photo of her husband Osvaldo, the top South American Olympian at Squaw Valley in 1960, reuniting with Tom Corcoran and Max Marolt in 2002. Marv Chandler offers a long reminiscence of Otto Schniebs, longtime coach of the Dartmouth ski team. He was "a delightful personality . . . but not a teacher," Chandler says. Terry Fletcher adds some details to the biography of Bob Lange, and Russell French sends in a history of the revolutionary Chris ski, which never actually reached the market.

The Lady and the Avalauncher, by Morten Lund
Talent and determination made Jerry Nunn the youngest ski patroller in California. Also the first female ski patroller. She became one of the first avalanche control experts, and one of the first Forest Service snow rangers. By the late '60s, she was the commercial force behind the success of the Avalauncher.

Industry: Release! The First "Safety" Bindings, by Seth Masia
The early release bindings, invented by Portland racer Hjalmar Hvam, didn't save many legs. It took anti-friction pads, elastic travel and the standardization of the plastic boot sole put a dent in the injury rate.
