NSA/USSA marks 100th anniversary, May 6-7

Founding of National Ski Association celebrated at Ishpmening. It's also the 50th anniversary of the U.S. National Ski Hall of Fame.

Those aching to celebrate ski historical events need to mark their 2005 calendars for May 6 and 7, the tentative dates when the birthplace of organized skiing in America celebrates the 100th anniversary of the founding of the National Ski Association, forebear of the United States Ski Association.

The NSA was founded on February 21, 1905 in Ishpeming under the direction of the principals of the Ishpeming Ski Club after the end of a sponsored jumping meet that was declared the first official U.S. national ski championship of any kind. Ole Westgard of Ishpeming won the 1905 jump, thus becoming this country's first national ski champion.

The founding of NSA in Ishpeming was a main factor in the town's being chosen as the location for the U.S. National Ski Hall of Fame and Museum. A rather modest Hall of Fame and Museum building was dedicated in Ishpeming on February 14, 1954 with funds mostly raised in Ishpeming and the surrounding Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The 50th anniversary of the U.S. National Ski Hall of Fame and Museum will be celebrated along with the 100th anniversary of NSA/USSA in the grand and very modern National Ski Hall of Fame and Museum off Ishpeming's main street, dedicated in 1997.

The highlight of the May 2005 celebration in Ishpeming will be a banquet in honor of the 125 living members of those now in the Hall of Fame, known as "Honored Members," many of whom are expected to attend. Those interested in joining the Honored Members at their banquet may be kept advised of the progress of the plans and the scope of the program by writing to the U.S. National Ski Hall of Fame, PO box 91, Ishpeming MI 49849; alternatively send an email to skihall@uplogon.com or phone at 906 485 6323. The Hall of Fame website may be viewed at skihall.com. --Morten Lund
