Jan. 10, 2005 Norge Ski Club marks centennial Chicago jumping club plans tournament, festival Jan. 15-16 FOX RIVER GROVE -- The Norge Ski Club is celebrating its 100-year anniversary next weekend with ski-jumping competitions, other festivities and Norwegians. About 75 ski jumpers between the ages of 6 and 65--some from Norway--are expected to compete at the club's long-time training site north of U.S. Highway 14 in Fox River Grove. Skiers will use one of the club's five jumps--the tallest of which starts atop a tower nearly 10 stories high. The organization was founded in 1905 when a group of Norwegians living in Chicago decided they wanted a ski club. "In the old days, they used to ship in snow in boxcars from Wisconsin when it was too warm down here," said Sue Knapp, a club member and village resident. "Nothing stops this tournament." Festivities on Saturday include a junior tournament, which starts at noon. At 6 p.m., skiers will be competing under the lights in a target-jump competition, a new event. Afterward there will be a performance by the band Bluefunk Infidelity, a bonfire and fireworks. On Jan. 16, tournament competition starts at 1 p.m. Admission is $10 for prepurchased tickets; $15 at the gate. Norge raises money to support the training of Olympic-caliber ski jumpers, according to Bart Lockhart, a club member from Barrington. From the Chicago Tribune. |
