WHAT IS ISHA?

The International Skiing History Association is a not-for-profit corporation, whose mission is to preserve and advance the knowledge of ski history and to increase public awareness of the sport's heritage.

More than a thousand skiers belong to ISHA. While mostly from the United States, they hail from many nations. Members are defined by their love of the sport and its rich past. Our mission has been enthusiastically endorsed by former champions, including Stein Eriksen, Billy Kidd and Nancy Greene Raine. Members include Olympic medalists such as Penny Pitou, past Presidents of the U.S. Ski Team, distinguished members of the FIS, 10th Mountain Division members, members of the Ski Hall of Fame, ski area pioneers, and filmmakers. But you needn't be a ski world insider to belong. It merely takes an interest in this most beautiful of sports.

The Association was founded in 1991 by the late Mason Beekley, who amassed what is said to be the world's largest private collection of ski books and art. The collection will open to the public for the first time in December, 2003, in a newly created museum at Mammoth Lakes, California. The Skiing History Association's administration is located in Vermont and Colorado; we are incorporated in Connecticut, which was Mason Beekley's home state.

HOW WE CARRY OUT OUR MISSION

JOURNAL. ISHA publishes a quarterly magazine of serious and popular ski history, Skiing Heritage. It contains carefully researched profiles of the great racers and pioneers who shaped the sport. Regular departments in Heritage tell about early technique and equipment, resorts and old inns. There are book reviews, and news of museum shows and openings. Skiing Heritage is created by the former chief editors and writers for national ski magazines, and is overseen by an Editorial Review Board of knowledgeable ski historians. The official journal of the U.S. National Ski Hall of Fame and Museum, it is the world’s largest periodical devoted to ski history.

WEBSITE. ISHA operates the most extensive website dedicated to the sport’s colorful past, www.skiinghistory.org. At the website can be found a rich array of information, including an index to past articles in Skiing Heritage, historic Olympic and World Championship records, biographies, important dates in ski history, a 50-year index to articles in SKI Magazine, and links to the websites of ski museums world-wide. You can join an on-line forum, ask questions about ski history, receive answers, and join in commentary.

MEETINGS, MUSEUMS. We convene an annual Gathering of ISHA members in historic ski towns, helping to increase local interest in the sport’s heritage. In the past ten years, we have handed out 60 awards to the authors of ski history books, and to journalists who have devoted their professional lives to recording the sport’s history. We are leading the way in promoting more collaboration among regional ski museums.

HOW YOU CAN JOIN

By joining the Skiing History Association, you become part of a community of skiers working to preserve the sport’s proud heritage. For $40 annually, you receive four issues of Skiing Heritage, and are eligible to participate in ISHA’s annual gathering.

To become a member, CLICK HERE.

GIVE A SUBSCRIPTION Consider giving a year’s subscription and membership to a friend, or multiple subscriptions to several skiing friends. Your gift is tax-deductible. Consider also giving Skiing Heritage to your local library, or to a ski academy where a child you know is studying.

HOW TO DONATE A CHARITABLE GIFT.

The publication of Skiing Heritage, and the maintenance and expansion of our website, entail substantial costs of research, editing and writing. Our subscription revenues fall far short of covering these costs. You can help. More than 400 people and ski companies gave to the Skiing History Association during the past year. ISHA is a 501(c)(3) corporation, so your donation is tax-deductible. Send a check to the International Skiing History Association, 530 Cheese Factory Rd., So. Burlington VT 06403. Your generous support is appreciated.

BEQUEST. A painless, tax-beneficial way to ensure the continuation of ISHA's mission is a bequest. Consider adding the following language to your will: "I give and bequeath to the International Skiing History Association the sum of $_____ to be used for its general purposes."

IN MEMORY OF OTHERS We loved them, and admired them. Now they're gone, leaving a memory of a life well-lived. Many of us mourn the passing of those whose lives we pay tribute to in Heritage. If you would like to contribute to ISHA in the memory of a long-time loved one, acquaintance or skiing friend, send your contribution to ISHA.

GIFTS OF STOCK Gifts of securities to ISHA can be a smart financial move that helps you save taxes while offering the personal satisfaction of helping the Association. By contributing securities instead of cash, you gain a tax advantage through claiming the full market value of the securities as a tax deduction while neither you nor ISHA owe any tax. All gifts, including those made in the memory of others, are acknowledged in the pages of Skiing Heritage.
