2010 International Skiing History Association
SKIING HERITAGE WEEK
Park City, Utah
Monday, March 22 to
Saturday, March 27, 2010
A Dilemma: Skiing or Skiing History . . . or Both?
Those contemplating attending the International Skiing History
Association’s 2010 Skiing Heritage Week festivities March
22-27, 2010 in Park City , Utah face a major dilemma. (Hint: it
doesn’t pertain to getting a legal cocktail in Utah since
the state’s oft-maligned liquor laws were dramatically liberalized
last July).
The quandary before the ski enthusiasts/ski historians is this:
How best to maximize their visit to a venue that offers both world-class
skiing and world-class ski history repositories at their lodging’s
doorstep?
To ease any possible stress that may come upon Heritage Week attendees,
the host organizing committee and ISHA are putting together a schedule
that will satisfy both the ski and history cravings, and offer the
camaraderie and good times that define Heritage Week..
For those who’ll put skiing first on their to-do list, the
docket includes skiing forays at The Canyons, Deer Valley and Park
City Mountain Resort, all within a kick-turn of the Park City’s
history-laden, oft-bustling old Main Street. Plus – there’s
a ski outing planned for storied Alta Ski Area, which is observing
its 71st year, and adjacent Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort in Little
Cottonwood Canyon east of Salt Lake City .
Those itching to satisfy their thirst for matters historic, the
Joe Quinney Winter Sports Center/Alf Engen Ski Museum at Utah ’s
Olympic Park (www.olyparks.com) will help fill the bill. The $11
million enclave houses the Engen Museum and the 2002 Olympic Winter
Games Museum, sure to rekindle those heady times of the last Winter
Games held in the U.S.
Almost adjacent to The Canyons Resort where the group will be housed,
the Olympic Park’s tiara of activities also includes such
Olympic-caliber gems as a luge/bobsled track, 90- 120-meter ski
jumping hills, freestyle training slopes and splash pool.
If ski history is the visitor’s focus, fear not. It can be
satisfied to the 10th power at the University of Utah ’s J.
Willard Marriott Library’s Ski Archives, arguably the country’s
largest repositories of ski history. Established in 1989 at the
University on Salt Lake City ’s east bench, the archives include
thousands of ski photos as well as videos tape, news clippings,
scrapbooks, special collections, the files of the Salt Lake Organizing
Committee for the Olympic Winter Games of 2002, the U.S. Ski and
Snowboard Assn., and those of several area resorts. (To accommodate
those who will not be able to visit the archives at the library,
there will be a sampling of Ski Archives items on display during
Heritage Week at The Canyons.)
The Ski Archives (www.skiarchives.org) and the Engen Museum (www.engenmuseum.org)
enjoy a unique partnership that is a ski historian’s dream.
The museum houses the large, three-dimensional historic pieces and
the Ski Archives preserves and makes available to the public flat,
easier-to-file items.
Skiing Heritage Week activity planners also hope to include a tour
of the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Assn.’s new $25 million training
and rehabilitation center, which was opened last summer a just east
of Park City .
All of this on top of the traditional ISHA Skiing Heritage Week
events - - - The Beekley Dinner and Beekley Lecture, the free wheeling
and entertaining Moves and Shakers evening, and the annual ISHA
Awards dinner, honoring the world’s best skiing history books
and films, along with lifetime skiing history skiing history achievements.

committee and executive director of the Alf Engen Ski Museum , early
