| An
invitation to ISHA’s
17th Annual
SKIING HERITAGE WEEK
Aspen,
Colorado
March 30-April 4, 2008
Mark your calendars! The place and dates for Skiing
Heritage Week 2008 are set. Aspen is the place, the Hotel Jerome
is our host hotel and the dates are Sunday, March 30 to Friday,
April 4.

We have received great support from the folks in Aspen. The rates
are very close to 2007, which is remarkable since rooms at the Hotel
Jerome normally are upwards of $450/night. Events are shaping up
nicely. Plan on skiing several mountains with local guides and dining
in some of Aspen's beautiful and historical sites.

Vice
President Doug Pfeiffer and President Mason Beekley address attendees
at the Eighth Annual Gathering at Mont Tremblant

An
all star I.S.H.A. cast, with Lac Quimet and Gray Rocks in the background:
Peggy Johannsen Austin, daughter of Canadian pioneer trailblazer,
Jack Rabbit Johannsen; Joanne Hewson, top 1950s international racer;
Peter Picard, pioneer 1930s instructor in the Sierra, and
Lucille Wheeler, Canadas 1958 gold medalist daughter of the
founder of Grey Rocks.
Those I.S.H.A. Trips
In the past ten years, I have organized and led 18 ski trips in
the U.S., Austria, Switzerland, Canada, France and Italy for the
Amateur Ski Club of New York. I have also been on a number of NASJA
(journalists) trips. In the same years, my husband Joe and I have
been five times to I.S.H.A. Gatherings. The I.S.H.A. trips have
truly been some of our favorites.
Back when I was a beginner, I lived in Rochester, New York nursing
bruises acquired while trying to learn the art of skiing Eastern
ice. Back then the annual John Jay film always assurred us we were
part of a new movement. I recall with such fondness the wit and
wisdom Jays wonderful films reflected. And where else but
on an I.S.H.A. trip could you watch John Jay movies with John Jay
himself showing them? This year at Banff, John was wearing what
must be his favorite sweater. It is the same one he wore in the
1960s Taos film he was projecting for us.
Where else but on an I.S.H.A. trip would we have the chance to
chat with Alan Engen about his recently published book on his father
Alf? Where else would we sit at the table with Bill Briggs during
a banquet and hear Bills extraordinary story of the first
ski descent of the Grand Teton? Or better yet, spend the day trying
to keep up with him on Sunshine Meadows?
It was nice to start each day by having breakfast with the likes
of Jerry and Jimmie Nunn, Wolfie Lert, and Peter Picard. All of
them have made ski history. And yet they are here for the same reason
as we are. They just love skiing. Their conversation skips the bells
and whistles that come with vanity.
We are nostalgic for those good old days when skiers went to the
mountain to ski and enjoy the camaraderie. That is what we find
at the I.S.H.A. Gatherings. The price is right, the sites a delight.
And every time, it is the members themselves who make it all so
wonderfully worthwhile. -- Mary Kerr
